Before you touch anything: food safety

If product is out of the safe zone, follow your HACCP plan: move inventory, tag equipment, and document temperatures. This article covers non-invasive checks only—no panel removal or live electrical work.

1) Confirm the thermostat setpoint (and that it’s not locked)

  • Verify the setpoint matches your standard (many kitchens target roughly 35–38°F depending on product).
  • Check for accidental setpoint changes or a locked controller.

2) Check door sealing and traffic

Busy services mean doors open constantly. A bad gasket, misaligned door, or failed closer can warm a box even when refrigeration is otherwise fine.

3) Look for ice on the evaporator

Ice means airflow restriction or defrost issues. You may see frost at the coil cover, weak airflow at ducts, or swinging product temps.

4) Confirm evaporator fans are moving air

No airflow inside the box = fast temperature rise. Note whether fans are spinning and whether airflow feels normal.

5) Inspect condenser airflow (visually, safely)

Grease and dust on condenser coils are common in kitchens. Note heavy buildup for your technician—do not open energized panels.

6) Listen for compressor activity

Silence, repeated clicking, or humming without normal run behavior can indicate electrical, control, or compressor problems.

7) Review temperature trends

A sudden rise often points to controls, electrical events, or a door left open. A slow drift may indicate coil cleanliness, refrigerant, or weak compressor capacity.

8) Avoid blocking coil and returns

Keep product off coils and away from fans while you triage.

9) Gather info for the service call

Share current temp, brand/model if known, error codes, and whether ice is present. That speeds diagnosis on arrival.
